Although Domino is a very stable product, occasionally things go wrong with Notes databases. They can become corrupt, require a fix up, lose their full-text index, and more. Usually this is virtually impossible for an administrator to detect before an end-user tries to open the database and discovers that they cannot. Then your phone rings.
VitalSigns proactively scans all the databases on a Domino server, looking for problems. Of course, this can be turned on or off for a specific server, but we recommend that it be turned on.
Once a day– in the middle of the night—the VitalSigns Database Health service loops through every database on the server and attempts to open it. If the database can be opened, VitalSigns loops through all the views and refreshes them. If the database is full-text indexed, VitalSigns attempts to access the index. In essence, we simulate an end-user trying to access the database to see if Notes returns any error codes.
Based on a request from a prospective customer, a new feature was added to Database Health. Beginning with VS 10.4a, if problems are found as part of a Database Health Scan, an alert is sent to the administrator for corrective action. To turn this on, make sure your alert definition (Preferences, Alerts) has the box checked for “applies to Notes databases”
